Adele proves that sound and vision is a powerful combination
Did you see the BRIT Awards recently? I was channel hopping at the time, but stopped on singer Adele’s performance as there was something captivating about it. I found myself glued to the television screen – it was just her and a piano, but the performance was so striking I couldn’t turn it off.
Since then I’ve heard all the DJs on the radio commenting on how the song has rocketed up the charts following her appearance on the BRITS, and it got me thinking about what a good illustration it was for psychologist Albert Mehrabian’s formula:
- 7% of meaning is in the words that are spoken
- 38% of meaning is in the way that the words are said
- 55% of meaning is in facial expression and body language.
The impact was in the way she sang, her stage presence and the absolute feeling she put into it. But without the memory of the performance, the song could still be ‘just another song’ – it’s the vision that is conjured up when you hear the song that brings it to life.
While I’m not suggesting you start singing your marketing messages, consider how much more power you could add by adding a visual aspect!
Here’s a link to the performance if you missed it!
